Mosquitos interview fall 2006 with vocalist Juju Stulbach and
guitarist Chris Root

By Angelo M. De Ieso II

The third release of NYC’s saccarine pop outfit Mosquitos proves undoubtably that less is indeed more.
The complexity of the “saudade” bossa nova asthetic arrives in sententiously luscious tracks. The
group features the serene bilingual female vocals of Rio De Janeiro native Juju Stulbach bolstered by
guitarist-singer Chris Root and producer/synth programmer Jon Marshall Smith. Wistful melancholic
singalongs distend throughout the album which pays homage to Stulbach’s deceased mother who was
a big inspiration to the songwriter’s resplendent craft. Perhaps one of the most listenable works in
recent years, “III” is a must listen to album for indie-pop purists. Juju and Chris, the couple behind the
band recently sat down to discuss the latest release and the history behind the band.

ADI: Mosquitos III has been billed as “a more sophisticated and dreamily pschedelic” album. What are
your opinion on the sophistication of the album and your views of the group’s growth up to this point?

JS: The album, I don’t know if it’s more sophisticated, but there’s a certain depth to the emotion of the
motions, the lyrics, and we tried different sounds. The story started with Mosquitos I where we used
our relationship as a metaphor or backbone. This first album started with a love letter from Chris to
me. It was all sunshine passion and love.

CR: Everything was new.

JS: Yeah. Everything was new. The second album, Sunshine Barato was the honeymoon of that. We had a
great response and reviews. Eighty percent of the second record was recorded in Mexico in ten days.
It just came out…it was flowering. There’s a lot of nature on the second record. It’s just about the
sunshine and everything. And a year and a half later, things didn’t get worse but as they deepened,
other colors started to emerge and other, I wouldn’t say problems, but other situations life brought us
that were not all happy happy sunshine…there were days of rain and days of sorrow…I think this
latest record shows these other colors that weren’t there yet (in the previous albums).

CR: For me personally, I get inspired to write when good things are happening. But Juju takes a lot from
other parts of emotion. If I’m not happy, I’m not writing. JS: If I’m happy, I’m not writing. (Both laugh together).
CR: As for the psychedelic part, we both love psychedelic music.

JS: It’s all the mushrooms. (Both chuckle again)

CR: Back in the day we went to San Jose De Pacifico, a town in Mexico, whose culture is based on taking
mushrooms. We were living in Mexico for a little while and we got in a car and drove like four hours
to get there. It’s really crazy.

JS: We drank the tea, and as it was interesting. As it was all happening, we didn’t know it was
happening…it wasn’t the usual mushroom trip. It was very intense, very real, very rooted. As we
drove away and as time went by, I kept remember colors and feelings and messages. It was very real.

ADI: From what I have read, you returned to Rio De Janero and spent some time with your (Juju) mother
before she passed away unexpectedly. That was a big blow and also a big inspiration. You had songs
already written and then this hits you…How did that evolve your album and how much of the writing
done before this massive change hold up in your music?

JS: With our music, it’s like life. Not a lot is always planned. For me, it is just what comes out as a
response to what is happening to me rather than a conscious “this is what I want to say.” The songs
that were there before were still a part of us and after my mom’s death, a whole scheme of emotions
that I hadn’t been so in touch with or just a lot of old new questions arose in a much different way. I
have no way to say where I am with that even now. It keeps evolving into different states for me.

CR: I think that when we started to write this third record, a lot of things had happened up to that
point…just regular stuff that happens to families.

JS: Not so regular.

CR: Yeah, actually crazy. We made a whole record before going to Rio. We wanted to get the material to
the label…

JS: We wanted to get it done. We were tired.

CR: And then when we went away and listened to what we did, we were surrounded by nature and the
moon was so big in Mexico, all the dogs were howling, there were lizards everywhere…We became
inspired again. We thought “we can’t just do that, we want to do something of more substance.” We
started to write again and grow. We went to Brazil and when we got back we took all of this
inspiration and finished the record and made it way better.

ADI: what is meant by the Portugese term “saudade” used to describe your music?

JS: It is a noun in Portugese. In English it is a sort of verb meaning “to miss or long” to describe that
feeling. You can long for many things, not just people. Saudade is very sweet and deep at the same
time. It is more than a word.

CR: There’s no translation in English.

JS: It can be many ways. To love a person, there is love in the heart. Love can have so many connotations.
Saudade is like that, too. It’s a melancholic feeling. It’s when you are so happy you cry or when you
miss something but don’t know what.

ADI: Your songs are catchy and succint. Do you ever write so many songs that you find it difficult to limit
an album to a select number?

CR: Growing up the way I did, on junk food and television, my attention spand is such that I can get bored
very easily, I’m like “that’s it, that’s the idea” and just move on. I wanted to make music my career
and life. I realized that if I made a tape and sent it somewhere and someone sticks it in and doesn’t like
it, the tendency is to just move on. And I’m the same way, so I’ve always tried to compact everything
into a short amount of time. There’s longer songs on the third record than we’ve ever written. We’re
already writing songs now before there’s any lyrics. It’s not so important to have short songs like that
any more. As we grow I care less who is listening and write for myself and what’s gonna happen is
gonna happen.

ADI: What sort of theme or feeling do you want an audience to take away from your music?

JS: Live it is different from the album. With the album you can just lie down on the floor and listen to it.
On the album, I would like it reach closer to the belly more than in the head…just listen to the words
and the music and relaz and feel more naked. On the stage, I’ve felt it is more like an altar kind of
thing. If the lights are on then we are living, not just in our living room anymore. I want the audience
to feel “that is fun and I am alive. My body’s working and my heart is beating. I want to go out and
talk, have another drink, communicate.” Because that is how I feel when I am on stage. When I get out
that is how I want to feel. It is quite different.

CR: The stage was never so much a part of it for me. I think it was just a part of what I had to do. I love to
write and record. Those are my favorite aspects of it all. The stage for me has always been a bit of a
struggle because I never wanted to be a rock star. I started writing songs as a drummer. Everytime I
was in a band something would fall apart so I was like “fuck it. I’ll write my own songs.” Don’t worry
about what’s going to happen. Juju has pushed me to realize that the stage is more important. Flowers
and projection on a low budget adds a lot and makes me more relaxed. It’s more…it’s a celebration.

ADI: Why did you choose the moniker “The Mosquitos”?

CR: We met on a film set. I thought she was beautiful and I gave her a CD. She ended up in Brazil with the
CD and she sent me a postcard saying she really liked it. I told her I was going to come down and we
were going to make music together. She thought I was crazy, but I went down and we wrote four
songs together on the beach. We gave it to Bar-None…It was the only label we submitted it to and we
got a record deal. We didn’t even know each other, meeting only twice for about a half hour..My
original idea was to call the project Chris and Juju. The first one would be Chris and Juju in Rio and in
my imagination everyone would love it and then we could do Chris and Juju in Paris so we could
move there and live there for six months, record a record and experience the life and activity in that
part of the world and then move on to Prague or whereever we decided was the next place. When I got
back to New York, Jon who was recording and engineering it added keyboards and was getting into
the band. It seemed like a natural three-way thing. There was a song on the original recording called
“Mosquito.” It was inspired by a night in Brazil when I got bit by a mosquito all night. I couldn’t find
this mosquito…I was covered in bites and so realized how a relationship between a boy and a girl
could be like that of a mosquito and a human being. The mosquito takes its pleasure in sucking life out
of you. (Juju laughs) At the time that is kind of how I was feeling—(to Juju) not you. Then after I put
that record out, I found out that Sonic Youth had a side project called Mosquito and a bunch of bar
bands of the same name. But now we actually own the name The Mosquitos. ♥

Gus Gus' Magnús Jónsson interview
Interview with former Gus Gus DJ Magnús Jónsson

Q. Gus Gus just dropped Forever in June 2006. How long did it take you
record the record and what sort of process was involved in creating this 21st century LP?

A. We deployed a 21st century method & it took us Forever.

Q. Gus Gus has been constantly evolving and metamorphosizing since it's inception in 1995.
You started with 12 members and "slimmed down" after This Is Normal came out in 1999.
Does the name, in your opinion hold true to the ideals that you all started with back in the early days?

A. Yeah, if you hold true that at the start there was no plan and everybody just came together through chance.
As for public opinion, that is a whole other issue.
The public thinks that the stars have gone but all shined as bright...(",)...

Q. You have performed more than 500 times in more than 30 countries.
First, what has this worldly experience brought to you folks as Icelanders,
and secondly what do you feel you have brought culturally to these vast regions?

A. 1. Worldly experience, 2. Icelanders

Q. Germany has been quite receptive to Gus Gus.
Would you attribute this to your sound and the popularity of techno and beat driven music in Germany,
the influence of Fassbinder, or perhaps a combination of the two,
or...feel free to say whatever...

A. We'd like to thank God for Germany! We think that it's mainly due to the popularity of repetitive
beats in Germany and the quest for perfection in
sequencer-based music that we all strive to achieve.
We thrive on it

Q. How did you get involved with your vocalist Earth?

A. We used to wine and dine at the same places and she had strong intensions of
becoming a singing sensation and after proof of her ability she was hired.
We didn't intend Gus Gus to become an instrumental band allthough we love
listening to and making instrumental tracks but they won't cut it in what we wanna be doing.

Q. You stated that Attention was well received with the exception of
"old conservative fans of Gus Gus that didn't seem to accept the direction the band had chosen."
What has this experience been like for you guys, how have you handled the shift,
and where do you place the new album in regards to your previous releases?

A. It's different. It's a continuation of T-World but blended with our pop aspirations that
Gus Gus was supposed tp be a pop experiment for me and Biggi Veira.
But all the other participants in that experiment either had their own agenda or read answer to question number two.

Q. Tell me more about T-World, that name, and your affinity for French automobiles?

A. T-world is an ancient cult.
The name is the motto of that cult "The Followers Of The World" and me personally would like 2 follow in a French car...

Interview with Morgan Grace

A: What's new with MG/MG3? Touring? Recording?

Morgan: We kind of disbanded in Jan, I was feeling frustrated about some stuff and spread really thin so we took a break. Me and Sam Henry still play together of course and do MG shows. We also have an X tribute band with Sean Flora and Geoff Clarkson so we wanted to concentrate on that. Sam and I have played with 4 bass players in 2 years so we were feeling frustrated and getting tired of rehearsing our songs with someone new all the time. It's been really cool working on our X tribute though, it's been nice to take a break from our own stuff. No plans to tour right now or record, just playing shows.

A: What can people expect of your forthcoming live show(s)?

M: Our live shows for the summer are going to kick ass because we'll be joined by Dave K the original bassist of the Wipers. It'll be the loud thunderous rawk of the MG3 with the magic of Dave and Sam reuniting. They were the rhythm section for the Wipers first album Is This Real? in 1979.

Describe your experience working with Dave Koupal of the Wipers.

M: I have no experience, he doesn't get here til June. He's been living in Ohio for the last 25 years with his wife and son. He left the Wipers in 1980 or so in the middle of recording Youth of America. Sam and I have been frustrated with finding a bass player for a long time, we never really clicked with anyone, with all due respect to the guys we've played with of course. nothing bad, just always kind of missing something. We started talking about Dave Koupal "wouldn't it be great if Dave came out and did some shows with us?" Sam sent him our new album and my first solo album and plans just started evolving from that. We're really excited.

A: Tell me more about Kleveland.

M: Stephanie Smith has more hutzpah in her pinkie finger than the rest of us put together. Kleveland is her with Matt K on bass and Danny Turbo Carbo on drums. This show is the CD Release for the long awaited new album. check them out - HERE. It is always an honor and a privilege to play a show with them. Stephanie is my hero.

"Melody's True"

Out Now!

The most incredible garage-pop of the year is out now. Stuart Valentine plays drums for the Out Crowd, but that has nothing to do with this infectious sugary sweet LP. Unlike his other outfit, the Out Crowd, Stuart's solo album "Melody's True", it isnot routed in the guitar wielding psychedelia of the 60s. It is straight ahead jangly pop with a beat that might cause you to lip-sync to yourself in front of you bedroom mirror. And like it or not, is one of those albums that comes at you, track by track, with catchy and sultry hooks. Valentine is a born-drummer and plays just about everything on this work. With the help of some of his friends and the masterful production work of Brain Coates (Dandy Warhols)Mr. Valentine has devised an indie-popster's dream release (self-released). Influences of the new release include Portland icon, Elliott Smith, Oasis, and Blur among other Brit and American pop acts. The beautiful songwritership of Stuart is something to experience for yourself and forget about all these other names I just dropped.

3 hour show/Cuspidor live (1st hr)
My friend Lucas from Cuspidor came down to the KPSU dungeon
space and graced me and any listeners with a fabulous
series of songs. Of all the bands and artists that
have come down to the sub-basement of Smith Center (KPSU),
it is rare that one will REALLY rule as much as Lucas does.
I mean, I appreciate ALL of the artists sharing
their art with me and the rest of KPSU's listeners,
but this was truly "off the hook"!
i forgot to fill out a playlist tonight, but i played a lot of local other stuff that I dig, par example:
super xx man, blue skies for black hearts, minmae, the outcrowd,
bronwyn, the cullottes, reclinerland, the joggers,
the standard, the thermals, oma yang, ross and the hellpets,
jackie, the leeds, cocaine unicorn, a john
henry memorial, celesteville, peter pants, m. ward,
the high violets, the upsidedown, green circles, digital knife,
planes intersect, casiotone for the
painfully alone, kind of like spitting, wet confetti,
minor thirds, man of the year, the very foundation, the
empty set, thanksgiving, and so many many more that
escape me now... one love... angelo

Ross Beach in-studio
I had the extreme pleasure of having Mr. Ross Beach (from
Ross and the Hellpets and formerly in Neutral Milk
Hotel and the Gerbils) in studio to kick it and play some acoustic songs.
He just released a new album on A Bouncing Space Records
called "You Make It Look So Easy." Check it out on this
web site: www.abouncingspace.com/youmakeitlooksoeasy.htm

thru Hell-o-ween (or Hello-weenies. It is chilly in
Portland lately and soon to drop water from the
clouds. the Doctor Phantom Rocker is playing "I Been

singing Soundgarden's "Rusty Cage"--super tight!

That Time of Year
Man oh man...in the last month I have had the fortune of
going to so many good shows (I guess it's that time of
year again).
The weather has been great as well!I have been reering up for the CMJ music festival in NYC
but with so many good shows here in Portland, who needs a music fest?!
I got to see the Quails, the Liars, the Yeah Yeah Yeahs, the Doves, Shannon Wright,
Hella, Party of Hellacopters (missed Enon on this bill
but they will be at CMJ on Halloween), Super XX Man, A John Henry Memorial,
Thanksgiving, +/-, Hawkline Monster, Blue Skies For Black Hearts, Sleater-
Kinney, Stuart Valentine, My Morning Jacket, and so much more...
But the ultimate show I got to see would have to be a tie between
Jurassic 5 (they had the Crystal bumping on springs!)and Spoon with the Oranges Band over at Berbati's Pan.
WOW!
My friend Christina from Merge is in love with Britt from Spoon and I can see why...
Anyhow, I am almost through with this sickness I have been dealing with and things are looking up
John Vandeslice will be playing at the Blackbird on Friday
with Super XX Man and the Long Winters. JV will
be doing an in-studio performance here at KPSU at 5pm on Friday after the lovely and talented Jana McCall
of Up Records Fame!
Anyhow, enough of this mumbo jumbo, let's get down to tonight's playlist,
dedicated to all the poor music fans who got ripped off by Mike Thrasher and his money grubbing enterprise:

Song/Artist/Label

1. "Why Can't I Touch It"/Elf Power/Orange Twin
2. "Hello Hello Hi"/From Bubblegun To Sky/Eenie Meenie
3. "New Orleans"/The Essex Green/Elephant 6

5. "All The Pretty Girls Go To The City"/Spoon/Merge
6. "Give The Peeps What They Need (Instrumental)"/Public Enemy/Koch
7. "My Street"/The Oranges Band/Lookout!

10. "Cigaretiquette"/Lambchop/Merge
11. "There's An End"/The Greenhornes/Telstar
12. "On"/Large Professor with Busta Rhymes/Matador
13. "Eple"/Royksopp (from Melody A.M.)/Astralwerks
14. "Warp Warp (City Developed Part 3)"/Valvola & Mac Donald Duck Eclair/S.H.A.D.O.
15. "Cocaine Junkie O.D./Kennedy/Sea Level

17. "Growing Up Too Fast"/Capital City/Near by Music
18. "Success"/Matt Keating/Future Farmer
19. "You Can't Push Me Away"/Out Of Key Harmony/Darla

I think I need a longer show lately, cuz there's so much new stuff that I wanna play (despite a couple of older cuts from the early 21st century that I played in the set tonight...)
I need out of this sub-basement space, so I am bouncing.
Big ups to Mario, Amaya, Jean Paul, Curt, Brandon (BA Barracas), Stephan, Dave, Kaja,
and everyone else who got me through today...

roughly my 100th show
Sam is in here talking to me about Raleigh Hills and
Beaverton. I feel like I am such a Portlander somehow.
Tonight I will just play whatever, but I'm gonna keep it
real ad off the hee-zy for shee-zy. Sam now is telling
me that Beaverton sucks and RH is a little nicer.
I haven't spent a lot of time in those towns/cities.
I have been here in Portland for 3 years and
still don't know my way around far outside.
Suppose it is because I haven't driven an auto around here much.
I am going to NYC for the CMJ College Music Festival with
Aaron Miles and Elliott Adams-two pals of mine from KPSU.
I am also trying to do some homework, but find myself so easily
distracted.
I am supposed to go grab an pint with
the Dr. Phantom Rocker after my show.
We'll see...

Here's what I played tonight Tuesday, October 8th, 2002:

17. Camper Van Beethoven/"Honey Hi"/Tusk/Pitch-A-Tent

so that's this week's sort of jumbled together and seat-of-my-pants show.
I hope everyone out there enjoyed it. It rocked either way.
Big ups to Christina at Merge, Dawn at Capital,
Erin at Lookout!, Bryan at Jet Set, Brent at Interscope,
Clint at Palm, Daniel and Jason at Fanatic, Helen at Team Clermont,
Big Ern at Future Farmer, Pete at Up, Jennifer at Caboose Music,
BR at Triage, Ed at sL, Curt at Magic Marker,
Jen at 555, Graham at Spectre, Jerry at Tinderbox,
Alex at Mute, Michael at Parasol, Rob at Jealous Butcher, Susan B. at Subpop,
and so many more that I am forgetting for sending KPSU cool
music and hooking us up with cool shows!
See you soon. Make sure to check out rapper

Back To School Special
Had to go back to school at PSU today. Yippee skippy!
It was a good day though. What am I saying? It was a Tony
the Tiger Grrrrrrrreat day! I saw Cinerama, Ballboy,

Ballboy came in to the KPSU studios and graced us

extra special
This Thursday at 7pm, Calvin from K Records will be @ KPSU

Don't Miss It!

I Can't Believe I Am Awake Right Now
boy oh boy! It's early and I am at KPSU. I went to Music
Fest NW last night to see some local bands.
Here's who I saw: the Badger King, the High Violets, the Decemberists, Captain Vs. Crew, the Outcrowd, and
Reclinerland (who played on KPSU's Live Friday with my
buddy Scott of Super XX Man). The bands were all great and
I was lucky enough to win 10 dollars on videocrack
(poker) then blew it all on drinks. My friend Stuart bought me a Greyhound (not the dog, the
drink) and that set a brother into orbit, but anyway, I
had fun...so much fun in fact, that I wound up sleeping
at KPSU's studios (don't tell okay). See, today and
tomorrow we are doing inventory of our entire database
which includes over 12,000 cds. That will take some
time. It is supposed to involve the help of our lovely
volunteers, but good luck dragging 'em out this early on a
Sunday. Anyhow, check out more on Reclinerland and
soon Super XX Man at www.lelprecordings.com
Much love,

Live Friday

This was a great edition of KPSU's Live Friday. At 4pm,
Steve Shelley, the drum whiz from Sonic Youth came by to
talk about the SY tour and his record label Smells Like
Records with such phenomenal artists as Fuck, Chris Lee,
the Rondelles, Lee Hazelwood and so many more. He was
such a nice guy! Then after that, local electronic
laptop group Y.A.C.H.T. played a set for the lovely
listeners. Y.A.C.H.T. consists of Jona (Badger King)
and Adam (Yume Bitsu). Wow! Check out KPSU every

have a great week, y'all...I'm outta here (for now)....

Irving/Panty Lions Interview

Wow. what a bunch of cool people those kids from
Irving and the Panty Lions were. Irving has a new disc
out on Eenie Meenie records and PL on Amazing Grease.
Both hail from the LA area and are a real treat for
indie-popsters. The 2 bands played in Portland on
Sunday August 19th at the lovely Blackbird venue on NE
37th and Sandy Blvd. Lots of fun coming up on the
program here. The latest album from the Bay's heroes,
the Pattern (Lookout! records) is super rad! Morrissey
played a few Oregon shows and I missed them, but
there's a good chance I play a cut from my vegan pal's
greatest hits CD. August 30th will be really busy for
indie-pop and rock showgoers. My faves, the Minders
will be playing in town on that date as well as Minmae,
a John Henry Memorial, Celesteville, Sleepyhouse, and
more, and one other show that I will likely attend the
Sonic Youth/Quix-O-Tic at the Crystal Ballroom. See
them blowing up the college charts at
http://www.cmj.com
Whole lotta love...
xo
ps- I will be starting my show tonight at 7pm (til 9pm)
